Practical information
Nîmes is easy to explore on foot: the major Roman monuments lie within a small area around the Écusson. Here are the essentials for getting here, finding your way and combining your admissions.
Getting to Nîmes
The city lies 579 kilometres south of Paris. The TGV links Paris to Nîmes in about 2 hours 50 minutes. By road, the city is served by the A9 motorway. Nîmes-Garons airport completes the options. From the station, avenue Feuchères leads on foot to the esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle and the Arènes.
Getting around on foot
The historic centre, the Écusson, is best explored on foot. From the Arènes, the Maison Carrée is very close, and then the quays lead to the Jardins de la Fontaine. The Tour Magne overlooks the garden from the top of Mont Cavalier: the climb is short but steep. In summer, bring water and a hat.
The tourist office
The tourist office is at 6 boulevard des Arènes. You can reach it on 04 66 58 38 00. It offers guided tours, a ticket desk, tickets for the little tourist train and brochures. It also sells the Nîmes CityPass, for discovering the city and the 38 municipalities of its area.
The Pass Romanité
The Pass Romanité gives one entry to the Museum of Roman History (Musée de la Romanité), the Arènes, the Maison Carrée and the Tour Magne. It is valid for three days from the date of purchase and can be bought at the museum ticket desk, among other places. The prices given by the museum are 20.50 euros full price, 15 euros reduced, 9.50 euros for ages 7 to 17 and 49.50 euros for a family.
The two TGV stations
Nîmes station, sometimes called Nîmes-Centre, is at 1 boulevard Sergent-Triaire, at the end of avenue Feuchères. It is served by TGV trains to Paris-Gare-de-Lyon and by TER Occitanie regional trains. Nîmes-Pont-du-Gard station, opened on 15 December 2019, is located in Manduel and Redessan, about 14 kilometres from the centre. It has TGV and TER services; to reach the centre, take a TER train or line 33 of the Tango network, known as Express Gares. Check on your ticket which station your train leaves from.
The airport
Nîmes-Alès-Camargue-Cévennes airport (code FNI) lies within the municipalities of Nîmes and Saint-Gilles, near Garons. Ryanair operates flights to Charleroi Brussels South, Fez and Marrakesh, and seasonally to Dublin and London Stansted. A Tango network shuttle links it to the city centre.
Parking in the centre
The centre has 6,000 paid on-street spaces, divided into a red zone and a green zone. Parking is charged Monday to Friday from 9 am to 12 noon and from 2 pm to 7 pm, and on Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon. You get 30 minutes free once a day per vehicle by entering your number plate at the pay machine. Holders of the mobility inclusion card with the parking mention park free of charge with no time limit. For covered car parks, ask at the tourist office.
